This post will be used to review Ubuntu’s SOS, or “sos report” function. This is similar to SUSEs “supportconfig” option or you may also run into IBMs dbginfo.sh script.

All of these support options are going to work along the same lines. Providing a version of a compressed tarball that has a collection of collected files. These collected files therefore tell the story about how a particular machine is configured. This is useful when working with other support personnel who may need to know a little but about the machines in question. Looking at things like BLOCK Devices, Time, Network Configuration, Certficiates, Kernel versions, DNS virtualization information, is going to present a lot of useful information up front.
